Add path helpers for common schema collections and replace repeated defensive setdefault calls. Normalize missing structural objects after reading base schemas and extensions, and reject incorrectly typed containers early.
Replace the incomplete format notes with a human-oriented reference for compile_version 1, link it from the README, and retain the legacy compiler comparison under an explicitly historical filename.
