Strange error-message when creating cartogram

Trying to create a cartogram with the Gastner et al. algorithm I get this strange error-message:

Does your dataset have any specific characteristics? I need to check the code to see how we clean the geometries before sending them to the cartogram module, as, judging by the message, that could well be where the problem lies.
