Converting DBCS to SBCS

We are getting started on our VSCode journey. An issue we are having is Double Byte Characters (DBCS).
In our comments are Japanese characters and lower case characters that when we pull into VSCode the text becomes corrupt.
What can be done on these source code files to work with VSCode?

With some experimentation and a little ChatGPT help we were able to resolve. or at least looks that way.
Below is what we used, please let us know you see any potential issues.

CCSID 5026 is an EBCDIC Japanese CCSID specifically intended for Katakana characters (single-byte). It’s a single-byte CCSID primarily used for source files containing basic Japanese Katakana characters.

Limited in Unicode compatibility, making it problematic for modern editors like VS Code which expect Unicode or at least double-byte support for full Japanese text.

Result: When opening CCSID 5026 encoded source files directly in VS Code (which expects either UTF-8 or a more common encoding like Shift-JIS or Unicode), characters often become corrupted, particularly if double-byte characters are mixed or incorrectly interpreted.

CCSID 5035 is a full Japanese EBCDIC encoding with explicit support for DBCS (Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana).

Designed explicitly for mixed-byte Japanese text, making it significantly more compatible with comprehensive Japanese character sets than CCSID 5026.

Provides better mapping to Unicode, simplifying conversions to/from UTF-8.

Result: CCSID 5035 will generally convert more cleanly into Unicode-based encodings, such as UTF-8, compared to CCSID 5026.
