Confusing "outdated" message if latest release of update-browserslist-db is too old

I'm getting an odd message when running the update:

$ npx update-browserslist-db@latest
Browserslist: caniuse-lite is outdated. Please run:
  npx update-browserslist-db@latest
  Why you should do it regularly: https://github.com/browserslist/update-db#readme
Latest version:     1.0.30001750
Installed version:  1.0.30001750
caniuse-lite is up to date
caniuse-lite has been successfully updated

No target browser changes

Note that first the script claims that caniuse-lite is outdated, but then shows its version is the latest version (which matches the latest published version).

I'm filing the issue here rather than in update-browserslist-db since the error seems to be coming from this package; please let me know if this is not the right place.

Issues #724 and #875 may be related, but the #875 fix did not work for me, and in #724, the update did nothing. For me, the update actually works, but the update check still claims it's outdated.

Very likely that some tool bundled caniuse-lite inside, so npx update-browserslist-db@latest can’t update it.

The only solution is to find it (try to use grep in node_modules) and ask developer to do the right way.

So, in the course of tracking down the problem, I was able to reproduce this issue in a dummy package:

In an empty directory, I ran npm init and answered the setup questions. Then I ran npm install caniuse-lite@latest. I have the following package.json:

Nothing else is using caniuse-lite (it's my only dependency) and it's the latest version because I just installed it. Any ideas?

Can you show the output of date command? (since I and millions of other users haven’t faced this issue it should be somewhere in your environment)

The same code doesn’t generate an issue on my machine.

I suggest:

1. Remove npm cache.
2. Try to replace npm to pnpm.
3. Try to debug this code https://github.com/browserslist/browserslist/blob/main/node.js#L471

Okay, thanks. I found that if I npm install update-browserslist-db, the behavior goes away. It's only an issue when running through npx. I'll keep digging and post a follow-up if I learn anything in case someone else runs into the same issue.

I ran into this same problem and also had to run npm install update-browserslist-db to resolve it.
