How to prevent closing the tab accidentally ?

Is there a way of adding a confirmation like "Are you sure to close this tab" when clicking that "X" button of the tab?

The problem is that when opening multiple tabs in one window, "x" buttons appear more, so I keep accidentally click that close icon and losing my work.

When I try to close a window with multiple tabs, it asks for confirmation, but no confirmation when I click "close" on the single tab itself.

I asked Claude to update the settings json that hides the close button. I could not remember what settings. You can try AI agent to help you. Although it looks a bit ugly but better than accidentally close one.

I think an optional "Confirm before closing tab" setting would make sense.
Consider a developer working with multiple tabs:
Tab 1: Production server logs
Tab 2: Database migration
Tab 3: Long-running build process
Tab 4: Local development server
When switching between tabs, it's easy to accidentally click the X button instead of selecting a tab. Unlike closing an entire window with multiple tabs, closing a single tab happens immediately and can terminate running processes or make it harder to recover important output.
A confirmation prompt (or a setting to enable one) could help prevent accidental closures while remaining optional for users who prefer the current behavior.
Another possibility is to show a confirmation only when the tab contains an active process, similar to how browsers warn users before leaving a page with unsaved work.

Yes! 💯 Im so urgently looking for a confirmation message box (with default "cancel") that I can enable to ask me before actually closing a tab.

At least once a day, when scrolling through my rather large list of tabs, I accidentally click on the "X" with the mouse and the valuable tab and the console is gone.😭.

Making it configurable globally (or on a per-Terminal-parent-window-basis) so that I can enable/disable it. Or even on a per-tab-basis would be helpful.

You can hide the tab close button in Windows Terminal settings to reduce accidental tab closures.
Add the following setting to your settings.json:

This removes the X button from tabs, so tabs can only be closed via:
Ctrl + Shift + W
Right-click → Close tab
Command palette
It's not a confirmation dialog, but it effectively prevents accidental mouse clicks on the close button. Until Windows Terminal adds a "Confirm before closing tab" option, this is probably the safest workaround.

showCloseButtonInTab didn't work somehow, then I asked Claude and it did this:

and it worked, for now this is a great solution!

The theme solution was discussed in length above. We're also using #6549 (comment) for tracking the various ways that someone might want to be prompted before closing a pane/tab/window. Thanks!
