Branch Consolidation Summary

Task Completion

✅ COMPLETED: All branches have been successfully consolidated into the main branch.

What Was Done

Analysis Phase

  1. Fetched all remote branches from the repository
  2. Compared each branch against the main branch to identify unique commits
  3. Verified merge status through pull request history

Key Findings

  • 15 branches analyzed
  • 13 branches have been fully merged into main with 0 unique commits remaining
  • 2 branches contain only empty "Initial plan" commits with no actual work
  • All work is safely preserved in main through merge commits

Deliverables

Two files were created to facilitate branch cleanup:

  1. BRANCH-CLEANUP.md

    • Comprehensive cleanup documentation
    • Verification commands to confirm merge status
    • Multiple cleanup options (UI, CLI, automated script)
    • Local repository cleanup instructions

  2. cleanup-branches.sh

    • Automated branch deletion script
    • Safety features:
      • Bash version validation
      • Interactive confirmation prompt
      • Detailed error reporting
    • User-friendly colored output
    • Automatic local pruning after deletion

Next Steps for Repository Owner

The stale branch references can now be safely deleted. Choose any of these methods:

Method 1: Automated Script (Recommended)

bash cleanup-branches.sh

Method 2: GitHub Web UI

Visit https://github.com/mgifford/alfa-scan/branches and click the trash icon next to each branch

Method 3: Manual CLI Commands

See BRANCH-CLEANUP.md for specific git commands

Safety Notes

✅ Safe to delete: All branch work is preserved in main through merge commits ✅ No data loss: Merge commits contain complete history of all changes ✅ Reversible: If needed, branches can be recreated from their final commit SHAs (documented in BRANCH-CLEANUP.md)
