thoughts on cross-device sync?

I'm deciding right now how/if i want to integrate hister into how i use computers. it's running so far so good on my desktop! but i swapped to my laptop quickly and noticed the firefox extension synchronized to it. I don't have it set up here, so of course it's failing (and loudly). So i wonder; how are people using it across devices?

• i could throw the entire folder into syncthing and run an instance per device. That seems the best to me until i remember how often the index is going to be updated in real world terms, and how syncthing isn't going to have any clue how to merge changes to the db.
• running a central server would work. sounds like a headache :p
• one instance per device, continue using the browser built in sync, then use import-browser on a regular basis. anybody whose website i see is now seeing double the traffic, and recent additions will be delayed, but otherwise fine.

I definitely recommend the second suggested solution only.

It isn't safe to copy the index files while Hister keeping it open, so the first option only works if you stop hister before the sync on both sides. The third option loses all the advantage of having the browser extension that can gather the website content from the opened tabs - this way network/rendering errors can occur.

I'm planning to add import/export commands to Hister. I think that would be the proper way to handle synchronization.

Import/export commands would be great to have. I've been using hister on a desktop and laptop and really enjoyed it so far. I don't have the time right now to setup a central server and decide how I want to expose/access it. Meanwhile my search indexes keep growing on both sides and there will be a moment where it will be very useful to have a mechanism to merge them! I think more people may be in the same situation :)

@320x200 the import export has been implemented and it is included in the newest 0.15.0 release. That's what I'm using to populate https://hister.org/datasets.
