Download problems?

I'm still using 8.3.1 at the moment due to the RAM problem that would effect my computer.

Ever since Sunday, my download speeds have quite literally dropped to a crawl (1 kB/s) or stopped downloading entirely.

Prior to Sunday everything was working fine.

I think -at least according to general- that the Endpoint might have been increased by .1? is this presently being worked on? Would this explain why nothing seems to be progressing at the moment?

@Nojisumire I have Build 190 running, and speeds, for the past week, have been all over the place. Seeding has been dreadful, and still is. Restarting Tribler has helped on occasions, specifically when anonymisation has thrown up a warning - changing hop count didn't help. Also check you have peer connections, I noticed a few days ago my Tribler was not connected to any, you may have/ had a similar issue.

I seem to have noticed something regarding that.

This torrent has 4 seeds according to the tracker, but only 1 in DHT. It's trying to download from the 1 in the DHT. The ones in the tracker don't even enter into it -or even appear in the client list -at all...

Another has 1 seed, but nobody in the DHT, so it's not even trying to download anything from anybody. (Empty client list.)
Same with another that has 7 seeds, but nobody in the DHT.

It's acknowledging the data of the tracker, but it's not doing anything with it.

We've been seeing other reports about bad download performance when only using the DHT. I also notice a lot of "fake" peers in there (usually these are scrapers or fingerprinters). I wonder if people are now vibecoding so much garbage for their AI experiments and data crawling that this 2-decades-old data structure is now finally beginning to break. Speculation from my part, not sure.

Anyway, if the DHT really is the issue, you could try enabling the "Announce to all torrent trackers" setting. This should keep on pulling in more peers. It's not bandwidth efficient, but it should work around garbage DHT peers.

This sadly hasn't done anything. Still 4 seeds, no client list because empty DHT, nothing downloading. :(

Even restarted the client to see if that was the problem after setting it.

This may not be a DHT issue after all then. Another thing you could try, is to add additional trackers to the torrent using the default trackers feature or by adding single trackers in the trackers list of the torrent.

In our next release we will be running a newer download core. That might help things along too. It's about time for a new minor release (8.4.3). However, our university is actively engaged with exams and vacations - so a new Tribler release might take a little bit longer.

@qstokkink any chance of having a new build to test please? Recently been experiencing Tribler slowing down heavily, and then having to close down and restart Tribler to get torrents downloading/ uploading again.

Yes, I think it's about time to do a minor release. I'll go over the issues on our 8.4.3 milestone and see what can/should be moved to 8.4.4. I think we're stable enough for a new (minor) release.

@teddyrogers that's a GitHub quirk. Rerunning part of a build will wipe the previous assets.

This was actually working for a while, but for the last two weeks I haven't been able to download anything properly. (Got a few things stuck at 90%).

Now it looks like the DHT might be flaky...

The little icon keeps alternating between "anonymization available" and "limited anonymization - use 2 hops."

Also, it looks like the speed drops - at least at the moment - as a result of more (>28) peer connections? (Not sure if someone is deliberately poisoning the network, though.)

@Nojisumire 8.4.3 has some fixes for anonymization in challenging environments. Starting from 8.4.3, we also have a low-RAM mode setting, which should remedy your memory situation.

Our newest (pre-alpha, unstable!) https://github.com/Tribler/tribler/actions/runs/29588059899 197 build has the newest DHT updates and fixes. That may also help your situation, if you're brave enough to run nightly builds.
